Is "Friends" supposed to make you sad?

That late '90s sitcom is considered funny, light-hearted, etc. It leaves me asking myself "Am I the only one who feels bad for Phoebe Buffay?"

Okay, in case you haven't seen Friends, it's a show about a group of friends (obviously) who go through the years of probably 26-27 through 32-34? Anyways, they're all fairly young adults is my point. There's Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross.

Phoebe is a nice, kind of childlike woman with a rather sad past. Her dad left her when she was a kid and her adoptive mom, of course, remarried. Yet, when she was fourteen, her adoptive mom, Lily, killed herself by putting her head in a microwave and her and her twin, Ursula (also played by Lisa Kudrow) were forced to live on the streets and panhandle. Eventually, they both turned to mugging (it is revealed in later episodes that she mugged Ross) and were never able to afford high school or college.

Yeah, it just makes me sad, man.
